Coronavirus Officially Named COVID-19. The fast-spreading Coronavirus disease which has now affected about 42,000 people in China has an official name 'Covid-19'. The Chief of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus made this known saying " We now have a name for the disease and its Covid-19".

" We had to find a name that did not refer to a geographical location, an animal, an individual or group of people, and which is also pronounceable and related to the disease," the WHO chief added.

Dr Ghebreyesus explained the importance of giving the virus an official name.

He said " Having a name matters to prevent the use of other names that can be inaccurate or stigmatising.

It also gives us a standard format to use for any future coronavirus outbreaks."

The current death toll across China is over 1,000 with 103 deaths on Monday.

However, the number of new infections has reduced by 20 per cent, from 3,062 to 2,478 between the day before.

The WHO chief has said that there is still a chance to contain the disease with enough resources.
