The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), a body of Nigerian Doctors has advised the Nigerian government to conduct an independent evaluation of the coronavirus vaccine before administering it to Nigerians. The President of the association, Prof. Innocent Ujah, stated this while having an interview with a Channel Television TV host on Monday, saying the evaluation has become necessary following the wake of conspiracy surrounding the vaccine as well as considering the genetic characteristic of the vaccine being a foreign-based.

Uja recalled when chloroquine, a medication used for treating malaria started becoming ineffective first from the southern part of the country before the north and today has been faced out of the system.

He said, ”If the vaccines come to Nigeria, we need to quickly do our own evaluation of that vaccine. I cannot say with 100% certainty that in the process of developing this vaccine and the clinical trial whether African countries were involved.

“While we do not question the efficacy and safety, these things vary from place to place. The responses vary from place to place.

“In totality, it was thought that Chloroquine wasn’t effective and we changed.

According to him if we must adopt the vaccine, then we must need our own clinical trial as we cannot use blanket treatment to assume is fine with the African having a different genetic characteristic from where the vaccine was developed.

The Professor described the production process as an emergency, noting that real vaccines take years of study to ascertain their potency, arguing that six to nine months is too short to developed and approve a vaccine.

This was as the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 revealed last week that the coronavirus vaccine shall be administered to 40 million Nigerians.
