The United Nations through its agency, United Nation Children's Fund (UNICEF) has decried the rate of violence against children in the country. The Chief of UNICEF, Bauchi Field Office, Abdulai Kai made this known yesterday in Bauchi, during a press briefing organized to commemorate this year's children's day celebration.
Kai stated that based on a 2014 Nigeria Violence against Children Survey conducted by the National Population Commission in collaboration with the United States Centre for Disease Control and UNICEF, "one in four girls and one in ten boys experience sexual violence, while one in six girls and one in five boys experience emotional violence by a parent, caregiver or adult relative". He added that about six out of ten children experience some form of violence while fifty percent of all children suffer physical violence before they attain adult age.
The UNICEF Chief enjoined all stakeholders in the country to raise sensitization campaigns in this area stressing that violence usually have psychological effect on children and ultimately affect their growth and wellbeing "...all must take action to end violence against children. Violence against children is impacting negatively on children. I particularly call on the state government to take action top end violence against children"
