Abuse Of Tramadol Kills 20-Year-Old Man In Benue

A young man identified as Etim, believed to be in his late 20s has died after reportedly consuming over a thousand milligram of tramadol in Obaganya Otukpo, Benue State.

According to report Eti, who is popularly known as Ratty, became unconscious after consuming the substance and was rushed to Abba clinic at Ogiri Oko street, on April 30.

WHO Calls For added Cross Border Collaboration On Malaria Free Africa

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has beckoned on African countries to allocate more resources and strengthen cross-border collaboration to achieve a malaria-free Africa.

The WHO Country Representative in Nigeria, Dr. Wondi Alemu, made the call in Abuja while addressing journalists on the World Malaria Day 2018 with the theme: 'Ready to Beat Malaria'.

Dr. Alemu mentioned that the World Malaria Day is an occasion to renew political commitment and sustained investment for malaria prevention and control.

The Federal Ministry of Health has banned the production and importation of codeine as active pharmaceutical ingredient for cough preparations to check substance abuse among Nigerians.

The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, made the decision known in a statement issued by Mr Olajide Oshundun, Assistant Director of Information in the ministry, in Abuja on Tuesday.

The ban came as Aisha Buhari, wife of the president expressed concern about the addiction rate to the drug, especially in northern Nigeria.

Too Much Intake Of Energy Drinks Detrimental To Liver – Dietician

Dr Emeka Obi, a dietician in Abuja, has said that the high level of “B vitamins’’ in energy drinks can be very toxic to the human liver.

Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja, Obi, therefore, advised Nigerians to be cautious with the consumption of such drinks.

“Energy drinks like `Monster’, `Red Bull’ and `Lucozade Sports’ can be extremely helpful when the body is low on sugar level and energy.

Researchers at the University of Michigan (UM) are developing a pill that makes tumors light up when exposed to infrared light, and the concept has worked in mice.

“It’s actually based on a failed drug,” said Greg Thurber, UM assistant professor of chemical engineering and biomedical engineering, in a news release posted on UM website.

“It binds to the target, but it doesn’t do anything, which makes it perfect for imaging.”

Emzor's action to suspend the production of the drug is coming after one of its sales reps was caught on camera selling codeine illegally.

Emzor pharmaceutical company said it has suspended the production of the extremely addictive drug, codeine cough syrup, which is sending many Nigerian youths to their early graves as well as causing the recent hike of young people in rehabilitation centres and psychiatric homes across the country.
