The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) says it has confirmed fresh 550 new cases of the dreaded coronavirus in the country. The health agency disclosed this via its verified official Twitter handle yesterday. It revealed that with the additional new cases discovered, it has pushed the Nigerian total infection toll to 70,195.
Amidst the second wave of the coronavirus that is ravaging Europe and America, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has approved a vaccine that has been proven to be 90% effective in containing the pandemic, giving hope to the world that the virus might have met its waterloo.
The health agency explained that with the additional death recorded yesterday, the number of death recorded in Nigeria is now 1,182.
NCDC said the new record of yesterday was reported from 16 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Lagos being the epicentre of the pandemic in Nigeria has maintained being the state with the highest number against other states with 219 new cases.
Other states were FCT recorded 168 persons; Kaduna state with 52 cases; Kwara reported 19 cases while Kano and Rivers states recorded 15 cases each. Sokoto had 10, Enugu state reported 9 and Gombe state recorded 8.
More so, plateau and Osun states recorded 7 cases each; Anambra and Oyo had 5 each while Jigawa and Ogun state has 4 cases each; Bauchi state reported 2 and Edo state 1.
The health agency reported that it has discharged about 168 persons from across various isolation centres in the country.
Since August 2020, the 550 cases reported yesterday have remained the highest per day figure except on June 19 where 745 cases were recorded.
Meanwhile as at the time of reporting yesterday, NCDC said so far the country has a total of 70,195 cases while it has treated and discharged 65,110 while 1,182 persons died of the disease from across the 36 states of the Federation and the FCT.
Multi-sectoral national emergency operations centre (EOC) activated at Level 3, have continued to coordinate the national response activities, the agency said.
However, it cautions Nigerians to take responsibility and comply with the safety protocol of the health agency to remain safe especially during the yuletide season.
Accordingly, it said, “Limit all non-essential travel especially from high-risk countries. “Limit person-to-person contact and always wear a face mask,” it advised.
