The Federal Government has yesterday disclosed that considering the social and economic implication on the general masses, it would be difficult to impose another round of lockdown in the country.
The FG has also revealed that from just two national reference laboratories for a start, the country now has over 100 public and private laboratories spread across the country for testing coronavirus.
This is just as the Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Immigration Service; Mohammed Babandede had directed relevant formations to temporarily enforce travel restrictions on some 100 individual travelers for defaulting on COVID-19 tests.
Meanwhile, the Lagos state government has fixed January 18, for the resumption of schools for the second term of 2020/2021 academic session, while Nasarawa state Government had yesterday reiterated its stand directing both private and public schools to remain shut from the initial January 4th that was slated for the resumption and would re-consider situation in two weeks.
Accordingly, Edo state has recorded another 36 fresh cases of the coronavirus in the last five days, pushing the total number of cases to 198 since the hit of the second wave of the pandemic in the state from December 1, 2020.
Consequently, a mobile court was set up in the FCT to try violators of the protocol even as four packs and gardens were shut down for violating COVID-19 protocols.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed while speaking to newsmen in Lagos reiterated the resolve of the federal government to enforce the coronavirus protocol by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19.
Mr. Lia Mohammed while speaking about the lockdown said, “I don’t think there is anywhere the Federal Government said it will impose another lock-down. However, the Federal Government is not happy that Nigerians are not observing all the Covid-19 protocols like washing of hands and wearing of face masks. The Federal Government is aware of the economic and social implications of having another lock-down. The Federal Government will, however, urge Nigerians to follow all the Covid-19 protocols.”
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has revealed that it has recorded 1,204 fresh confirmed cases yesterday bring the total of the cases in Nigeria to 91,351.
The Health Agency also confirmed the death of seven persons within 24hrs pushing the toll of deaths to 1,318.
It disclosed that three deaths were recorded in Lagos State, two in Sokoto while one each from Abia and Kebbi state respectively.
