Health care providers, under the auspices of the Joint Health Sector (JOHESU) and Assembly of Healthcare Professional Association (AHPA), have issued a 15-day ultimatum to the Federal Government and other stakeholders informing them of her intended strike action come 17th September 2021.

The upcoming strike action is to drive home their demands on better welfare packages, the threat is coming despite the insistence of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD).

In a joint statement signed by Com. Biobelemoye Josiah, President Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria MHWUN and Com. Yusuf Kiyawa, Ag Secretary-General of MHWUN respectively, hinged their latest resolution on the nonchalant and biased attitude of the federal government over the plight of their members.

The strike notice which was forwarded to Independent newspapers on Sunday morning, in Abuja, was also copied to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, the leadership of the National Assembly, the Department of State Services DSS, the Nigerian Governors Forum, including the leadership of Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress highlighting demands which are yet to be met by the relevant government authorities.

Among the demands which JOHESU says are necessitating the current strike, threats include; adjustment of consolidated health salary structure CONHESS as was done with consolidated medical salary structure CONMESS since 2014.

Other demands are payment of withheld April and May 2018 salaries of our members and withheld salaries in Federal Medical Centres Owerri, JUTH, and LUTH. Review of defective implementation of Covid 19 special inducement and hazard allowance as well as an increase in the retirement age from 60-65 years for health workers and 70 years for consultant health professionals.
