NAFDAC Warns Nigerians Over Substandard Cough Syrups

The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned Nigerians against the use of 4 substandard cough syrups such as Promethazine Oral Solution, Magrip N Cold Syrup, Kofexmalin Baby Cough Syrup, and Makoff Baby Cough Syrup. The Director-General of NAFDAC, Mojisola Adeyeye stated that the listed products are not registered by the Agency, therefore, they should not be in circulation.


According to her, “If you have these substandard products, please do not use them. If you or someone you know have used them or suffered any adverse reaction/event, you are advised to seek immediate medical advice from a qualified healthcare professional. The public is also advised to report any incident through this email: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or call 0800-162-3322”.

She also advised Nigerians in possession of the listed goods to stop their importation, distribution, sale, or use and submit stock of the affected products to the nearest NAFDAC office.

On October 5, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a global alert over the India-made cough syrups which were linked to acute kidney injuries and 66 deaths among children in the Gambia.

The global health body disclosed that the manufacturers of these cough syrups, Maiden Pharmaceuticals did not provide guarantees on the safety and quality of the products to the WHO.
