President Muhammadu Buhari has removed the Chairman of the Governing Board of the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), Dr. Tonye Jaja. This was disclosed in a statement on Monday at a press conference by the spokesperson for the Attorney-General of the Federation, Dr. Umar Gwandu.

The document was dated October 15, 2020, and was signed by the Solicitor-General of the Federation and Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Justice, Mr. Dayo Apat (SAN).

The document stated that Jaja’s sack was with immediate effect but did not specify the reason behind his sack.

Jaja was also directed to hand over all the properties of the commission to the NCC Director-General, John Asein.

The sack of the NCC Chairman was an interesting turn of event as Jaja had written to the President on September 22, 2020, to suspend and investigate the NCC DG for alleged infractions.

5 board members dissociated themselves from his action because they accused him of personal vendetta and did not endorse Jaja’s move.

Jaja was inaugurated for a four-year tenure in May 2019. His sack is about two and a half years into his tenure.

According to reports, Dr. Jaja has hired the former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Kanu Agabi, and Mr. Femi Falana, SAN to contest his alleged illegal removal from office.
