The United States Central District Court in California has sentenced Ramon Abbas, popularly known as Hushpuppi to 11 years in prison for fraud and money laundering. However, he will spend 9 years in jail because he has already spent 2 years in custody since his arrest in June 2020.
He was arrested in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with 12 other members of his gang, he was then handed over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), taken to the United States of America (USA) and charged with offences bordering on fraud, money laundering, identity theft, impersonation, amongst others.
Hushpuppi and his associates allegedly defrauded about 1,926,400 people from the USA, United Kingdom, Qatar and other parts of the world.
He wrote a personal letter to the court explaining his source of wealth, criminal activities and regrets. He also pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy and commended the FBI for bringing him to justice.
