The Kano Magistrate Court remanded Alhassan Ado Doguwa, the House of Representative Majority Leader, in prison over a 5-count charge including culpable homicide, criminal conspiracy, mischief by fire, causing grievous hurt, and inciting public disturbance. The presiding judge, Ibrahim Yola made the judgment on Wednesday, following Doguwa’s arrest by the Kano State Police Command at the Aminu Kano International Airport on his way to board a flight heading to Abuja.
The Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, Haruna Kiyawa said he was arrested after refusing to honor the police’s invitation to answer questions over his involvement in the incident which occurred on February 26.
Doguwa allegedly conspired with others to breach public peace in Tudun-Wada LGA of the state by burning the office of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), which led to the death of 2 persons while the collation of election results was ongoing.
According to reports, Doguwa was found in possession of a gun which he allegedly used to shoot 1 person dead while others sustained injuries.
The Defence Counsel appealed to the court to grant the defendant bail on the grounds of self-recognition, insisting that he would not jump bail but the Prosecution Counsel argued that the court should not grant Doguwa bail because part of the offenses against him included a capital offense.
The magistrate ordered the remand of Doguwa and adjourned the case to March 7, for hearing of the bail application.
