ASUU Made U-Turn On Strike Threat, Say Consultation Not Over

The Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) has deferred the earlier planned strike action, saying it has not finished its consultation.
This was made known by the union officials shortly after its National Executive council meeting.
The meeting was held at the University of Abuja, Festus Iyayi National Secretariat of ASUU during the weekend to review the level of government readiness in the implementation of its FGN-ASUU memorandum of understanding of December 23, 2020, and other related issues surrounding the academicians. Contained in a press statement titled, “Enough of this Blackmail” signed by the president of the Union, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, the academicians stated that the federal government has declined its earlier commitment on the plan of setting up an Inter-ministerial Committee to review the draft Renegotiated 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement.

We May Embark On Another Strike - ASUU Warns

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have threatened to embark on another strike following a three-week ultimatum issued by the union last month. The union made the call on Friday at separate briefings held in the northern and southern parts of the country where they said the government’s action has left them with no other option than to withdraw their services. Members of the Ibadan zone which comprises of the University of Ibadan, University of Ilorin, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Osun State University, and Kwara State University all agreed to what the zonal coordinator Professor Oyebamiji Oyegoke, said at the end of its zonal meeting held at the University of Ilorin.

Strike Inevitable, ASUU Says As It Issues Fresh 3-Week Strike Notice

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has given the Federal Government a fresh three-week notice of indefinite strike action, saying the strike is a resumption of the strike it suspended last year.
The Union alleged that some government officials including the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, and the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Sonny Echono are attempting to discredit the draft agreement reached by the federal government and the union in 2020.

Federal Government Begins Moves To Avert Possible ASUU Strike

The Federal Government has begun moves to prevent an industrial action in the country’s public universities as the Academic Staff Union of Universities’ three-week deadline ended on Sunday. The Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba stated this in an interview on Sunday. He revealed that the ministry had written a letter to the Ministry of Finance on the payment of allowances to staff of universities. It was gathered that Labour and Employment Minister Chris Ngige will today review the implementation of the Memorandum of Action (MoA) signed by the Federal Government and the ASUU. ASUU had on November 15 given the Federal Government a three-week ultimatum over government failure to meet its demands.
