President Mohammadu Buhari says the challenges of crises ravaging the country have its roots tie to ignorance. Buhari made this statement while speaking during the 8th convocation ceremony of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), held on Saturday in Abuja; Buhari reassured Nigerians of renewed commitment of his administration to providing Nigerians with affordable education for the youth.
Represented by Victor Onuaha, the deputy Executive secretary of the National University Commission (NUC), stated, “ it is of common knowledge that the root cause of most of the recorded crises of nationhood that we suffered in Nigeria are a resultant effect of ignorance, which we hope can be abated through viable education.
Onuoha revealed this is why the Federal Government of Nigeria is more committed than ever before, to making education affordable and accessible through the open and distance learning system. In this regard, therefore, the national policy on education has provided for all-time learning that has cut across all barriers through open and distance learning program.
Speaking further, he said as a government, we reiterate our commitment to continue to fund, the necessary resources and facilities through direct budgetary allocation, TETFund interventions and the NEEDS assessment funding in all, this will guarantee quality tertiary education to our teeming youth.”
Commending NOUN for its contribution to providing quality education, he added: “It is worth of recognition to note that NOUN continues to record successes at the national level by intensifying that access to higher education as well as making it affordable remains a goal. In this regard, the national open university of Nigeria has carved a position for itself both nationally and internationally.
