The Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu has said that because of the continuous rise in the case of COVID-19, Nigerian schools may not be open any time soon until they are sure its safe to do so.

However, contrary to the earlier belief that the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) would hold, after careful review, the Minister said the SSCE examination would not be allowed to hold in all schools until they are sure of the student’s safety.

The statement was made by the Minister while addressing the state House Correspondents shortly after the virtual meeting with the Federal Executive Council (FEC) in Abuja yesterday, saying WAEC cannot be a determinant factor for our school's resumption.

The Minister said he would prefer that Nigerian students loose an academic year than to expose them to the danger of coronavirus.

Meanwhile, he appealed to state governments that had already made a pronouncement of schools resumption date in their various states to retrace their position so as not to jeopardize the whole effort that has been achieved so far.

Therefore, declared, it is not safe to open schools now.
