The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) announced on Tuesday that tertiary institutions are allowed to set their cut-off marks for admission into their institutions. This decision was taken by the board during their 2021 policy meeting which was chaired by the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu.
This means there will no longer be uniform cut-off marks across institutions for the 2021/2022 admissions.
Speaking at the meeting, Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede said “Some universities such as University of Maiduguri, proposed 150; Usman Dan Fodio University, Sokoto, proposed 140; Pan Atlantic University proposed 210; University of Lagos 200; Lagos State University 190; Covenant University 190; and Bayero University, Kano, 180.”
According to reports, universities are not allowed to go below 120 as the cut-off mark while 100 will be for polytechnics and colleges of education.
Regarding the deadline for the closure of admissions, stakeholders at the meeting left the decision to the ministry of education because they were indecisive on the December 31,2021 deadline for all public institutions and January 31, 2022, as the deadline for all private institutions.
Oloyede also said “Nobody should charge more than N2,000 for Post Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination fee. The total gross is N2,000. It is not allowed by institutions to allow candidates to procure administrative charges.
Oloyede noted that some institutions were violating the government's directive that all admissions should be done through JAMB’s Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS).
Oloyede said, “Any institution that issued admission letters to candidates outside CAPS will be punished for such gross indiscipline and fraud.
“The consequence of admissions conducted outside of CAPS is grievous. It subjects the candidates to gloom future as a nemesis of illegal admission awaits them at the completion of study when it will be impossible to take full advantage of the acquired candidates.”
