The Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) has deferred the earlier planned strike action, saying it has not finished its consultation.
This was made known by the union officials shortly after its National Executive council meeting.
The meeting was held at the University of Abuja, Festus Iyayi National Secretariat of ASUU during the weekend to review the level of government readiness in the implementation of its FGN-ASUU memorandum of understanding of December 23, 2020, and other related issues surrounding the academicians. Contained in a press statement titled, “Enough of this Blackmail” signed by the president of the Union, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, the academicians stated that the federal government has declined its earlier commitment on the plan of setting up an Inter-ministerial Committee to review the draft Renegotiated 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement.
Last week ASUU threatened to embark on industrial action over the Federal Government's inability to stand by its promise to meet ASUU demands.
Apar from the Academic Earned Allowances, ASUU added that their demand to include the review of the NUC Act to arrest the proliferation of Universities by state governments who have obviously failed to fund the already existing ones; and also the adoption of the Transparency Accountability Solutions (UTAS) with concurrent stoppage of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System
(IPPIS) and distortion in salary payment.
Other issues involved are the release of the accumulated promotion arrears and review with the signing of the draft document on the Renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU-FG Agreement.
