NBC Sanction AIT And Others For Hate Speech

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), the broadcast regulator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has sanctioned four major television stations in the Country due to hate speech.

 

The television stations; Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), African Independent Television (AIT), Channels TV and Television Continental (TVC) were all sanctioned for airing on their stations hate speeches by politicians from both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the main opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Malam Is’haq Modibbo Kawu, Director General of NBC, made the revelation at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday. Although, it was gathered that the letters notifying the stations of the sanction is yet to be delivered to them.

He said: ‘’Broadcasters have a huge responsibility of protecting and guiding our democracy, and we have a very huge responsibility of ensuring that we don’t promote violence or anything that can lead to it.

“We have discovered that despite our repeated warnings some broadcast stations still allow politicians to let out hate speeches which are capable of throwing this country into crisis.

He warned media houses not to allow politicians to ruin their credibility.
