The Director-General (DG) of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Maj. Gen Suleiman Kazaure has threatened to withdraw corps members from Bayelsa state if the security of their stay in the state is not guaranteed.
Gen. Kazaure made this statement during his visit of duty tour of Batch A, 2019 NYSC orientation camp in Kaiama, Kolokumo/Opokuma Local Government Area of the state. The DG also paid homage to Governor Dickson at the Government House Yenagoa.
Following the death of two corps members, Popoola Oluwatobi Olamide and Geoge Onokpoma leaving Anthony Gbenga Dada, the third victim critically injured. The DG urged the Governor and security agencies to ensure adequate security for the youth corps members.
In his statement, “I have come to see the 2019 Batch ‘A’ corps members in the camp, and to assess some facilities in the camp, however, his major concern is the safety of the corps members.
The DG added he was very concerned about the incident that occurred last two weeks, where two corps members were killed, he revealed he is working with other security agencies to ensure their safety during their stay in the state.
He challenged the governor to do the needful about the safety of these young men that are national assets on national assignment. Failure by the state to protect them will compel his office to withdraw the services of corps members in Bayelsa state.
Meanwhile, he thanked the governor for supporting the scheme in erecting a permanent befitting Orientation camp and the upwards review of corps members allowance.
Dickson condoned with the NYSC family over the death unfortunate death of the corps members. He blamed the incident on a cult-related activity.
He, however, pleaded with the DG not to consider withdrawing corps members from the state as investigations have commenced towards identifying and prosecuting the culprits.
