The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has announced that it will partner with the Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) to educate its staff on disaster management. Dr. Maikanti Baru, the Group Managing Director (GMD), NNPC made the announcement in a statement while receiving the Secretary-General of NRCS, Mr. Abubakar Kende.
Baru said the training is necessary for NNPC staff across the country to be well equipped and prepared during any emergency situations, particularly because the corporation deals with highly inflammable materials.
The GMD also noted that some staff has been trained on road safety protocols through the Federal Road Safety Corps(FRSC) Special Marshall Programme, which some of them became certified Special Road, Marshalls.
While speaking, Kende explained that disaster management training is important, as it empowers participants to handle emergency situations and also save lives. He added that in 2017 the NRCS responded to 142 emergencies across 24 states, with 12,000 casualties successfully evacuated from the areas.
