The National Security Adviser (NSA), Maj. Gen Babagana Monguno (Rtd) has called for the abolishing of the Almajiri system of education in Nigeria, saying we cannot continue to keep extending the time to faze them out.

The NSA made this call at the unveiling of the revised national Security strategy for 2019 at the state house, Abuja, Monguno explained if the system is allowed unabated; it will make a u-turn to bite us the big time he said.

The National Security Strategy is a road map for security operations that is being reviewed every five years to update security roadmap.

Sometimes in June, Monguno disclosed that the federal government was considering proscribing the system to ensure every child is not denied of basic education.

The issue of illiteracy is a function of not going to school saying the Almajiri menace will continue to hunt for us long time after now , therefore we cannot continue to sweep the issue under carpet because one day if we do not take the necessary action we will leave to regret it big time.

He added it is a responsibility that we all need to confront as a common problem and address it once and for all without inhibition.

The NSA revealed that the issue of insecurity that has been a bend in Nigeria has a direct link with international influence, both internal and external factors have tangled into a matrix of the complex situation we found ourselves today, as it is now, it is a risk to all our collective security.

Monguno in his speech which partly reads; “The issue of insurgency in the northeast is directly linked to the issue of terrorism in the Sahel which is an increasingly volatile neighbourhood and the situation is also derived from what is happening in Libya which in turn is affected by the lack of security in Syria which derived its own situation ultimately from Iraq,”

He explained “Fundamentally, if we are going to take care of these problems, we need to safeguard the fast-growing young population of Nigeria and guess what? Librating people from clutch of poverty and illiteracy must be our first step.  Speaking further he disclosed, The administration of President Muhammadu Buhari in its pursuit for greater and enhanced security will not succumb to cheap blackmail by the disarming philosophy of compliance with some socio-cultural believe where others see it in tandem with nature which as people tend to be indisposed in handling it. We must take the bull by the horn and deal with these issues.”
