A joint operation involving personnel of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Nigerian Army, and Department of State Services (DSS) raided the operational headquarters of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), the military arm of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) located in Awomama, Oru East Local Government Area, Imo State.
Seven members of IPOB were killed, which included Ikonso Commander, who is allegedly the overall commander of IPOB and known as the group's vice president-designate.
However, an army officer and 3 policemen also died during the operation.
Ikonso is suspected to be the mastermind and coordinator of the attack on the Imo Police Headquarters, Owerri Correctional Centre on April 5, and several other attacks on security personnel and facilities across the region.
Items recovered from the raid include 6 AK 47 rifles, ammunition of different caliber, and bulletproof charms.
In reaction to the news, IPOB confirmed the killing of Ikonso but claimed Ikonso was ambushed and disputed the alleged raid of ESN operational headquarters by security agents.
IPOB said that Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma and all those involved "will pay dearly" to kill one of its commanders.
A statement by the Nigerian army read in part, "The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru has commended the troops, the police and DSS operatives for their determination in ensuring that the operation was a success.
He prayed for the repose of the souls of the gallant officers who lost their lives in the operation, stressing that their sacrifice will never be in vain."
