The Federal Government (FG) has inaugurated the governing board of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha performed the inauguration on behalf of the federal government on Thursday in Abuja.

Mustapha said, “Let me, therefore, congratulate the chairman and members of the governing board on your well-deserved appointments, which is a demonstration of Mr. President’s confidence in your integrity, intellectual abilities, and competence to contribute to the realization of the mandate of the commission.

“The commission is empowered to prevent, investigate, prosecute and penalize economic and financial crimes and is charged with the responsibility of enforcing the provisions of other laws and regulations relating to economic and financial crimes, as well as fight terrorism.

“Let me reiterate the fact that governing boards are creations of the enabling statutes of the various institutions, with the main responsibility for giving policy direction to management, in order to contribute towards the developmental goals of government.”

He also urged members of the governing board to create robust policy initiatives which will assist the present administration in its fight against corruption and also revamp the economy.

Prior to the inauguration, the Senate had confirmed Mr. President’s nominations of members of the board on October 5, 2021.

According to reports, members of the board include the Chairman of EFCC; Abdulrasheed Bawa, George Ekpungu, Anumba Adaeze, Kola Adeshina, Luqman Mohammed, Yahaya Mohammed, and representatives of law enforcement, security, and regulatory agencies.

EFCC Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, who also doubles as the executive chairman of the board said the commission has been operating without a governing board for six years.

Bawa stated that the inauguration of the board would improve the success of the commission in tackling economic and financial crimes.
