The North East Governors Forum (NEGF) has called on the Federal Government, FG to accelerate action towards execution of the hydro-electricity power project that was halted in a controversial manner in Taraba state some two years ago. The Governors made this call through a communiqué issued at the end of their meeting held at Gombe state Government House over the weekend. Accordingly, the Governors of Adamawa, Borno, Bauchi, Taraba, Gombe, and Yobe states met to deliberate on issues of power supply affecting the region which is giving them concern.
Contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting by the chairman of the forum Governor Mai mala Buni of Yobe state, he expressed concern over the backwardness the erratic power supply has caused the potential of the region a retrogressive development.
The Governor expressed that there is a direct correlation between insecurity, power supply, unemployment, and poverty as expressed in terms of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the region.
The communiqué partly read, “The NEGF, therefore, urges the North East Council of Chambers of Commerce to revive the North East Joint Trade Fair and commodity markets to stimulate economic activities,”
The Governors expressed worry over the increase in vulnerability of the region especially concerning security of lives as the un-relented effort of security forces has put the terrorist on their heel.
They call on the federal government to make a deliberate effort to come up with a robust security road map while collaborating with security agencies for being the region that shares a common border with three African countries concerning the influx of foreigners into the country.
