The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has issued warnings to broadcast stations that air programmes capable of undermining peaceful co-existence will not hesitate to shut or revoke their licences. The commission then went on to state that any further breaches of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code and Act will no longer be tolerated.

NBC had earlier in the week warned broadcast stations against allowing its guest to make comments that could undermine the country's peace and unity.

Mr Ekanem Antia, the spokesman of the commission, stated on Friday in Abuja that the Director-General, Malam Balarabe Ilelah, has given a final warning to stations that still allow unpatriotic individuals to make subversive, hateful, and inciting utterances, particularly post-election using their platform.

According to the statement, “NBC is giving its last warning to broadcast stations and will not hesitate to shut or revoke the licence of any when convinced that its activities are capable of undermining the peaceful co-existence of the country. Any further breaches of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code and Act will no longer be tolerated.

“In as much as the Commission believes in the freedom of expression, it is also seriously constrained to act decisively on any broadcaster that exploits the fragile peace of our nation."

Ilelah went on to commend the media for their selfless efforts in ensuring peaceful pre-election coverage, and also for their ability to keep the citizens informed.
