The President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki has accused the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris of threatening the nation's democracy by failing to honour an earlier invitation extended to him in respect of Senator Dino Melaye's saga. Saraki who made his position known i9n a statement issued by the Senate on Wednesday. According to him

"...The IG has said he cannot come. He wants to delegate it to a junior to come. Since we returned to democracy, there has been no IG that has refused to come. He is doing this and this is a threat to democracy. It is not only to us, it is also to the President. The President told him to go to Benue, and he refused to go"

The Senate President also reiterated his position via his verified Twitter handle @SPNigeria. He condemned the refusal of the IGP to appear before the senate for briefing.

His tweet read

"UPDATE: TODAY, the President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, reiterated that the failure of the Inspector General IG) of Police to show up for a Security Briefing on the killings across the country is a threat to democracy."
Recall that the Senate had invited Idris to come and brief it on the killings in the country, but, for the second time in less than a week, the IG had declined to make physical appearance.

Last week, he sent a Deputy Inspector General of Police to represent him claiming that he acted in line with the law. Following the refusal of the Senate to entertain his representative, the IG again on Wednesday failed to show up and sent the same representative to the Senate.

It was gathered that the Senate is planning to use the opportunity to wade into their colleague's matter.

Meanwhile, efforts to have the Spokesman of the Force to comment on the matter failed as he neither answered his phone nor replied messages sent to him.
