While many Nigerians have taken to the media to commend President Muhammadu Buhari for posthumously awarding GCFR to MKO Abiola, and recognizing June 12 as Democracy Day, a former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Alfa Belgore has said the move is illegal. Belgore in an interview with Premiumtimes said national honours cannot be awarded posthumously, much less the GCFR which is the highest honour in the land.
According to him;
“It is not done. It is for people living. The only thing they could do is to name a place after him, but national honours award, no,”
According to the report, Belgore who had a telephone conversation with the online media outfit on Wednesday night, said he was not consulted before the decision was taken.
