The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reassured Nigerian and the international community that there is no plan to shift elections. Although there were several litigations arising from the party primaries organised by the political parties themselves, these will not in any way make the election empire to shift its goal post.
Prof. Mahmud Yakubu, the INEC boss disclosed this yesterday in Abuja during a stakeholders meeting organised by INEC. He said the commission has been dragged to court 640 times and received 540 applications for the official true copy of those documents which arise from those party primaries.
The INEC boss revealed that the commission under him will continue to obey all court orders, and will not be distracted on the discharge of its statutory responsibility.
In his words, the INEC boss said, “Let me assure Nigerians and the stakeholders that smart card reader will be deployed in the 2019 elections. Our next big concern is the voter register and the availability of the PVC.
Prof. Yakubu added, “We have 14.2 million new voters, the commission printed 14.2 million cards. The commission is going to meet today (Thursday) and where it’s necessary; we review the arrangements for the collection of PVC,”
According to him, special consideration has been given to old people, visibly pregnant mothers, and the physically challenged persons to vote at the pooling units.
In his remarks, the acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, informed stakeholders that no VIP would be allowed to move around with police escort on election days.
He stressed, “No escort for VIPs on election day, any policeman who contravenes this order would be sanctioned,”
