The Senate had yesterday approved the proposal by the Buhari administration to henceforth make June 12 of every Year as Nigeria’s Democracy Day.

The approval of the bill by the Senate was in a demonstration to concur the same bill as passed by the House of Representative on the same issue.

President Buhari had last year declared June 12 as a new Nigeria Democracy Day in his effort to immortalize late MKO Abiola, who was believed to be the winner of June 12, 1993, Presidential Election.

To support president Buhari declaration and to give it a legal backing, two members from House of Reps, Kayode Oladele (APC, Ogun) and Edward Pwajok (PDP, Plateau ) moved a bill for June 12 to be recognized and lawfully be adopted as Nigeria’s new Democracy Day.

The bill, which seeks to amend the Public Holiday Act, was passed sometimes in March and transmitted to the red chamber for concurrence.

Meanwhile, at the plenary yesterday, the Senate leader, Ahmed Lawan (APC, Yobe) moved for the red chamber to concur the bill as passed by the lower House which all the senators agreed.
