The Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and Leaders of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the party have held a crucial meeting in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), ahead of the party's decision to appeal the ruling of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal which validated the election of President Muhammadu Buhari.
According to Dailytrust, the BoT chairman and secretary, Senators Walid Jibrin and Adolphus Wabara, led a few other members of the board to the UAE where they met with Atiku and discussed Nigeria’s politics and the judiciary.
The report said Senator Jibrin who confirmed that the meeting took place, disclosed that leaders of the BoT met with Atiku in Dubai where they spent a few days and returned to Nigeria, adding that the trip was successful.
On the essence of the meeting and why it was taking place in another country, Senator Jibrin was reported to have said he was at a meeting, requesting correspondents to call him back for details.
When Vigil360 contacted a senior official of the party at the Wadata Plaza Abuja, he disclosed that some national leaders are prevailing on Atiku not to approach the Supreme Court as doing would be futile. The official who sought anonymity said although the party was not comfortable with the way and manner in which the tribunal dismissed some of the issues raised, the disposition of the judiciary suggests that the Supreme Court would not toe a different part from the unanimous decision of the Appeal Court.
He added that the intervention by some of these stakeholders is responsible for the delay in the filing of appeal at the Supreme Court. He, however, said the decision of PDP Governors to support the filing of appeal at the Supreme Court is another factor that could inform the final decision of the party.
