The Presidency has reacted to the move by the Punch Newspaper to henceforth address the title of President Muhammadu Buhari as, Major General, his rank when he left the Nigerian Army.
In an article titled “Buhari Lawlessness: our stand” Punch said that henceforth, they will replace the title of President Buhari with his Military Rank as at when he left the Army in the 80s as, “Major General” and will also replace his administration with as a regime instead, until his government flush out their despicable contempt for the rule of law.
The newspaper made the decision following the re-arrest of Omoyele Sowore by the DSS, the publisher of Sahara reporters and convener of #RevolutioNow and the failure of the administration to release the Shiite leader, Ibrahim El-zakzaky among others.
The newspaper revealed it was protesting over the fashion on which president Buhari is running his administration.
But in a swift reaction to the Punch decision, Femi Adesina, the Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari on Media and Publicity, said the decision of the newspaper stance on addressing Buhari as Major General is not out of order as the president earned that rank through hard work, not a gift, and it is their entitlement for freedom of speech.
Mr. Adesina on his verified tweeter page @FemiAdesina disclosed that President Buhari earned that rank, Major General.
More so, he added the Punch are entitled to freedom of the press under Buhari Administration.
Adesina wrote: “If you decide to call him Major General, he wasn’t dashed the rank, he earned it. So, you are not completely out of order.
“The fact that you can do so is even another testimony to press freedom in Nigeria.”
