Abba Kyari Replacement: Gambari Speculated As Having Upper Hand

There were media speculations making round yesterday especially the social media that the former United Nations Under-Secretary, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari would be the next Chief of Staff to President Buhari.

 

A highly placed official in the presidency tipped a Daily Trust correspondence on Tuesday that though no official statement has been made so far of the appointment, but warned no one should be guided by speculations on the issue.

It was revealed that Gambari, who was in Lagos, was invited to the Presidential Villa, Abuja, a few days ago for what speculators think may be connected to occupying the office of the Chief of Staff.

Some days, several personalities had been speculated as to the possible successor to the office of the Chief of Staff which one of them was the Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation of President Yar’addua administration, Amb. Babagana Kingibe;

Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu; and the Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Customs Service, Hamid Ali.

Gambari, a native of Ilorin, Kwara state born 24th Nov 1944 attended Kings College, Lagos as well as the London School of Economics where he bagged B.Sc. (Economics) in Political Science with a speciality in International Relations.

He further bagged M.A and PhD in 1970 and 1974 respectively both in political Science/International Relations from New York’s and Columbian University.

Gambari taught briefly at the City University of New York and the state university of New York (Albany) from 1969-1974 where he returned to Nigerian and continued his teaching carrier at the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria rising to the rank of Professor in 1983.

He was called to serve as the DG of Nigerian Institute of International Affairs in October 1983, an office he occupied until he was called to serve as a Minister of External Affairs in the Buhari/Idiagbon regime in 1984.

Gambari set the record of the long-serving Ambassador/Permanent Representative of Nigeria to the United Nations from (Jan 1990 – Oct, 19990.

He was awarded a National honour of Commander of the Federal Republic in 2003 by the Obasanjo administration.
