The Senate President, Senator Ahmed Lawan has today debunked the rumor that he was pushing for Buhari's third term, said he stands by the Nigerian constitution. Lawan was reacting to a tweet by one Mayor who accused the Senate president of paving way for Buhari through a constitutional amendment.

Mayor in a tweet quoted the Senate President as “don’t mind the constitutional amendment to allow the unlimited term of office for President Buhari if he wishes is to perpetuate himself in office beyond 2023”

Reacting to the tweet, Lawan said the whole idea was an act of mischief targeted to tarnish the name of the lawmakers.

This was continued in a statement signed by Lawan through his Adviser on Media, Ola Awoniyi, Lawan who claimed that he has never made such remark.

The statement partly reads; “Our initial reaction was to ignore the ignoble mischief especially since it is not new, having been posted two years ago on 27 March 2019.

“We, therefore, say categorically that the Senate President has never made any such statement, before or after 2019.

The massage further explained that “The old tweet which was entirely the handiwork of mischief makers is now being circulated again on social media by purveyors of fake news.

He reminded the general public that the Nigerian constitution has a firm position on the tenure of the president that reflects the popular stand of all Nigerians.

He said, “Section 137(1)b states as follow: A person shall not be qualified for election to the office of President if (b) he has been elected to such office at any two previous elections.

He explained that the Nigerian Senate president has never found any fault with the said provision of the constitution.

He recalled that he was “a member of the National Assembly when in 2006 it threw out an attempt to amend that section of the Constitution and elongate the tenure of the President. The National Assembly acted then in obedience to the overwhelmingly popular desire of Nigerians.

He, therefore, wondered how on earth a mischief-maker would link such act to his name.

The Senate president said ‘He will stand by the well-considered and roundly appreciated the provision of the Constitution on the issue and will never subscribe to any move to amend it.

He, therefore, called on the general public to disregard such information as it is totally an act of mischief-making and a fabricated statement and mischievously attached to the Senate president's name.
