The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) non-elective convention has kicked off at Eagle Square in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital. At least 3,000 delegates drawn from the six geo-political zones of the country are expected on for the event. The main crux of the convention is the approval by delegates from the 36 states and Abuja for an extension of the tenure of the office of the National Caretaker Committee led by former governor of Kaduna State, Ahmed Makarfi.
Party faithful have described the non-elective convention, the first since the Supreme Court judgement, as a unity gathering of the PDP family.
The Chairman of the Convention Committee and Delta State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, believes the event will signal the party’s readiness to usurp power from the ruling APC.
The PDP National Caretaker Committee had on Friday extended the olive branch to its ousted national chairman, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff.
Vigil360 learnt that the faction of the sacked chairman, Alhaji Modu Sheriff and his supporters shunned the non-elective convention. The group alleged that the Makarfi’s led national caretaker committee had sidelined them in the scheme of things.
Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, said no member of the group was involved in today’s convention. They alleged that the culture of impunity they were fighting still hold sway in the party, and cited the removal of Chief Raymond Dokpesi as chairman publicity committee because one of the governors insisted on it.
