In a subtle rebuke to IPOB agitators, President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday morning reminded them that even the late Biafra secessionist warlord, Emeka Ojukwu, was convinced that Nigeria must remain one.
The President made the remarks in his nationwide broadcast following his return from a three month-long medical vacation in London.
Recounting his meeting with Ojukwu in 2003, the President said: “after I joined partisan politics, the late Chief Emeka Ojukwu came and stayed as my guest in my hometown Daura.
“Over two days we discussed in great depth till late into the night and analyzed the problems of Nigeria.
“We both came to the conclusion that the country must remain one and united,” the President stressed.
President Buhari, therefore, warned that his government will not allow “irresponsible elements to start trouble and when things get bad they run away and saddle others with the responsibility of bringing back order, if necessary with their blood,” insisting that “Nigeria’s unity is settled and not negotiable.”
Also, in an apparent reference to eviction threats from some Northern youths against Igbos resident in the area, President Buhari assured that “every Nigerian has the right to live and pursue his business anywhere in Nigeria without let or hindrance.”
Separatist agitations, hate speeches and lately, labor unrest from ASUU, had threatened to unsettle peace and stability in the country. Nigerians are optimistic that the return of the President would help resolve these issues.
