The Nigerian Army said it has commenced investigation into the activities of troops deployed to carryout Operation Python dance in the South East. The Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Sanni Usman stated this in a chat with newsmen in Abuja on Wednesday.
Sanni who was reacting to a viral short video of some soldiers assaulting youths believed to be members of Independent People of Biafra (IPOB) and forcing them to swim and drink murky water assured that the outcome of the investigation would be made public.
According to him “We are aware of certain video being circulated. We have gotten complaints of the said video, and have commenced an investigation into the matter and the report would be made public."
He added that “the General Officer Commanding 82 Division, Major General Adamu Abubakar, is investigating it and whatever it is, we will definitely let the public know about the outcome."
Recall that recently, soldiers were deployed to the South East, preparatory for the commencement of Operation Python dance which begins on Friday (tomorrow). The presence of the troops in the area has triggered mixed reactions from stakeholders, with some calling for their withdrawal.
Although the operation is yet to fully begin, residents and interest groups have accused the Army of assaulting and firing live ammunition at youths in the area.
Meanwhile, the Army has denied this allegation.
