The Nigerian Police in swift response to the reported attempted assassination on the Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, have arrested four of its officers and a personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil DefenceCorp on duty at his residence even as the investigation into the unfortunate incident is being sustained.

Unidentified gunmen reportedly gained entrance into the residence of the deputy senate president at No 2, Jim Nwobodo Street, Apo Legislative Quarters, Abuja, in an attempt to assassinate him and his family in the early hours of Tuesday.

Senator
Ekweremadu, while narrating the incident expressed displeasure at what he described as a poor attitude of senior police officers to the attack.

“The annoying aspect of it or the one that is worrisome is that at that point I called the Inspector-General of police (IGP), his phone was off. I called some of his aides, their phones rang out and nobody replied, till now. I called DIG operations, till I left my house, nobody showed up," he said.

However, the Police Public Relations Officer, DCP JimohMoshood, while addressing newsmen on Tuesday in Abuja, described the incident as a burglary stressing that similar incident also occurred at the residence of one HaliruAdamu, a neighbor to the deputy senate president.

Moshood
also said one of the arrested suspects Mohammed Yusuf, who is in custody is cooperating with the police and making useful statements in that regard.

According to the police, Yusuf upon interrogation has confessed to the crime and mentioned one Ali, who is currently at large having escaped from the scene.
