The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Tuesday sorted for a nationwide referendum on whether to suspend the ongoing industrial action that has paralyzed activities in the universities in the last three months or to continue until their demand are met hundred percent by the federal government.
According to (Daily Trust) the national leadership of the union had on Monday directed its zonal coordinators to put heads together with their chairpersons and conduct referendum on what the federal government has so far offered them and feedback the national leadership.
Accordingly, at the University of Ibadan chapter over two hundred (200) members voted for the continuation of the strike until the federal government has fully met their demand. Meanwhile, less than 100 members voted for the suspension of the strike with conditions.
Mr, Deji Omole, the union chairman of the Ibadan branch when contacted on phone revealed that the Congress only conducted a referendum on what the federal government offered, however, revealed congress is the principal that guide the leadership of the union on their struggle.
He added, for the meantime, the federal government has offered N25 billion for the revitalization of the Universities while at the later date the remaining part will be paid when resources are available.
The chairman revealed that though the government has agreed to pay additional N5 billion out of the owed N105 billion academic earn allowance. However, ASUU insisted the government must pay N30 billion.
Meanwhile, the federal government has agreed that the renegotiation should commence and end within the next six weeks.
