The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has disclosed that plans have been put in place to upgrade the transmission capacity to 10,000 megawatts by reconductoring seven critical lines nationwide.

Usman Gur Mohammed, Managing Director/CEO TCN made this known during a quarterly press conference on Wednesday in Abuja, adding that TCN achieved wheeling capacity of 8,100 megawatts by December last year and is committed to upgrading to 10,000 this year.

He said TCN has acquired new conductors which can carry more power capacity than the current conductors and are scheduled to arrive the country on the 27th of July.

The seven critical lines to be upgraded include the Onitsha-Awka-Oji River line, the Ikeja West-Alimosho-Ogba-Ota line, and the Alimosho-Alausa line, while others are the Kaduna-Zaria-Funtua-Gusau line, the Birnin Kebbi- Sokoto line, and the Kumbotso-Dan Agundi 132kV transmission line.

While addressing the press, the MD mentioned that the transmission lines would be able to transmit addition 2,000 and 3,000 megawatts which would be an addition to the 8,100 megawatts, making it at least 10,000 megawatts.

He revealed that TCN recovered about 775 containers out of 800 abandoned units over 10 years at the Nigerian ports, transforming them to substations including the recent Damaturu, Ilashe and Maiduguri substation.
