The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed the reason why they had to declared the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Diri Duoye as the Governor-elect of Bayelsa state following the Thursday Supreme Court Judgement that toppled the All Progressive Congress (APC) Governor-elect, David Lyon, who earlier won the election in November last year.
The INEC National Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, told pressmen in Abuja today that Mr Diri of the PDP has met the entire constitutional requirement to be declared the Governor-elect of Bayelsa state subsequent to the removal of Mr David Lyon who the apex Court ordered for withdrawal of his certificate.
The INEC boss in his statement which partly reads; “Without the votes scored by the All Progressives Congress (APC), whose candidates were deemed not to have participated in the election, the total number of lawful votes cast in the election now stand at 146,999.
“Out of this figure, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) scored the highest number of lawful votes with 143,172,”
“Similarly, the Party (PDP) has scored more than 25 % of the lawful votes cast in all the eight (8) Local Government Areas of the State,” Yakubu added.
