The former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has commended President Muhammadu Buhari giant strike for heeding to his advice of reducing the pump price of the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) to reflect current realities.
Atiku said democracy thrives when the sitting government accept positive advice and objective criticism from the opposition, saying for good governance, take the massage and live the messenger.
The main opposition leader also advised President Buhari to temporarily suspend all stamp duties pending when the economy picks up.
In his series of tweets, the Presidential candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2019 said, “I recommend that policies like the stamp duty on all types of accounts be temporarily suspended, until such time as the nation’s economy has turned the tide in the fight against this virulent scourge.
“Furthermore, as the landing cost of premium motor spirit, also known as petrol, has reduced significantly, it is strongly recommended that the government not absorb the savings, but also pass it on to the Nigerian people by way of reducing the pump price of PMS to reflect the current prevailing market costs.”
Consequently, the Buhari led government responded on Wednesday and announced the review in the price of fuel from formerly N145 to now N125.
The Federal Government hinged its decision on the crash of the crude oil price in the world market caused by the global pandemic coronavirus (COVID-19).
In reaction in his tweet Wednesday night after the Federal government has reviewed the fuel price, Atiku said, “The #CoronavirusOutbreak places a huge economic strain on Nigerians, which is why we counselled the FG to reduce the pump price of PMS.
“I commend the FG for taking this step and I urge that all hands should be on deck to rescue Nigeria from the economic downturn of the oil crash.”
