The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Tuesday handed over the certificate of return to Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, and his deputy Philip Shaibu, following their victory at the just concluded governorship election. INEC urged former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole; gubernatorial candidate of the APC, Osagie Ize-Iyamu, and other members of the APC to join hands with his administration to move the state forward. Governor Obaseki while receiving the certificate commended President Muhammadu Buhari for ensuring that the governorship election was free, fair, and credible.

"I received my certified of return today from INEC Nigeria after the landmark victory in Saturday's election," the governor wrote on his Twitter page.

"I restate my commitment to Edo people to deepen sustainable development and consolidate on our sterling legacies."

Obaseki garnered 307,955 votes across the 18 local government areas of the state to defeat APC candidate, Ize-Iyamu, who scored 223,619 votes.

Obaseki won 13 of 18 local governments, including his major contender’s local government in Edo State, while Ize-Iyamu won in five local governments.

He will be sworn in for his second term in office on November 12, 2020.
