The people of Ondo State are set to decide who the next governor of their state will be on Saturday, 10th October 2020 with 17 political parties, contesting for the gubernatorial election, however, the top 3 political parties in the race are the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP). The front runners for the position are APC’s Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN), Eyitayo Jegede of PDP, and the Deputy Governor Agboola Ajayi of ZLP. Governors and top members of both the APC and PDP stormed the State on Wednesday to show their solidarity for the respective party gubernatorial candidates.

Akeredolu of APC and Jegede of PDP exchanged banter at a debate organized by Channels Television on Thursday. Ajayi of ZLP was noticeably absent.

The Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Mahmood Yakubu, has cautioned INEC staff to avoid engaging in electoral fraud because anyone caught would be prosecuted with the full weight of the law.

The Chairman of PDP’s National Campaign Council and Governor of Oyo State, Mr. Seyi Makinde said the PDP has rejected the Vice-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede, as the chief returning officer of Saturday’s election.

Makinde said Ogunbodede would not be fair and transparent in his duties because of his association with APC’s Akeredolu.

Governor Akeredolu urged indigenes of Ondo state to vote for their most suitable candidate. He also urged voters to desist from engaging in any form of electoral malpractice.

Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu has ordered the restriction of vehicular movements between 11:59 pm today to 6:00 pm tomorrow Saturday.

In a statement by Frank Mba, the Force Public Relations Officer (PRO) on Friday, he said the IGP assured that "adequate security arrangement has been emplaced to secure the public space for the election.", enjoining residents to bear any inconveniences arising from the restriction order as it is part of necessary sacrifices to nurture and sustain democracy in the country".
