Former Deputy Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Prof. Kingsley Moghalu has called on the National Assembly to ensure that Nigeria in Diaspora got to exercise their franchise in the coming 2023 General election.
Moghalu, a presidential candidate of the Young Progressive Party (YPP) during the 2019 general election revealed that allowing Nigerians in Diaspora to vote would give them a sense of ownership of the country.
The former banking guru who is also the convenor of To Build Nation (TBAN), explained that Nigerian living abroad should be factored into participating in the country’s political process as is being obtainable in other climes.
He said, “Nigerians living and earning their living abroad is not a crime. It is their right. Their citizenship shouldn’t be denigrated because of where they live.
“Every country has a diaspora, some at leisure (people who just want to live in foreign lands), others by force of circumstances (economic migration),” Moghalu explained.
According to him, fast-tracking the constitutional review to accommodate Diaspora would give INEC ample time to fine-tune its process.
He noted that though the year 2023 may seem far, but is still so close especially for the electoral empire that is at the forefront of ensuring every eligible Nigeria is captured to be part of the voting process.
He noted that “If the Central Bank of Nigeria can woo diaspora remittances, there is nothing wrong to woo their votes too,”.
