The House of Representatives has commenced investigation on the factors responsible for the Federal Government’s decision to ban Twitter in Nigeria and the laws upon which the action was based. According to the house, within the next 10 days, it intends to investigate the legality or otherwise of the controversial banning of Twitter. The members of the lower house have also resolved to invite the Minister of Culture and Information, Lai Mohammed as part of its investigation.

The Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, in his opening remarks at the plenary on Tuesday, said the micro-blogging platform had metamorphosed into a huge communication tool and platform for enterprise especially for the teeming youth in the country.

Gbajabiamila also said the lawmakers had been overwhelmed with protests and demands for the parliament to intervene in the matter.

The speaker said the micro-blogging site has been used for both good and bad and the legislature must make sure that the policies of government are in accordance with the law and do not have adverse consequences on the populace.
