The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan has directed the Committee on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to screen the appointment of Ms. Lauretta Onochie, alongside five others as INEC commissioners.

Members of the opposition, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the senate have on several occasions voiced their dismay at the nomination of Ms. Lauretta Onochie as an INEC commissioner.

Opposition federal lawmakers have accused Onochie of being a card-carrying member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and have faulted her nomination as INEC commissioner to represent Delta State.

Other nominees for confirmation are Prof. Muhammad Kallah (Katsina); Dr. Baba Bila (North-East); Saidu Ahmad (Jigawa); Prof. Kunle Ajayi (Ekiti), and Prof Sani Adam (North-Central).

The Senate INEC panel, which is chaired by Senator Kabiru Gaya has been given four weeks to conclude screening of nominees and report back to the red chamber of the National Assembly at plenary.
