Major stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have prevented the removal of Uche Secondus as the national chairman of the party. Secondus has been under intense pressure from several factions in the PDP to resign and has been accused of being responsible for the mass exodus of PDP members to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Governor of Sokoto state and chairman of the PDP governors forum, Aminu Tambuwal disclosed that party members have agreed to resolve the crisis after a closed-door meeting on Tuesday.
Tambuwal said “This meeting has agreed that immediately a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting should be convened for the party to constitute the national convention planning committee and the national convention should be held latest by the end of October.
“We are very happy to announce that we have discussed all matters and we have resolved to continue to work as a united family.”
PDP members have agreed to allow Secondus to remain the party’s chairman until their convention that is scheduled for October.
According to reports, the convention was initially scheduled for December but was shifted to October in order to pacify PDP members who were insisting on Secondus’ resignation.
The stakeholders’ meeting was attended by all 13 PDP governors, former Senate Presidents, Senators David Mark, and Bukola Saraki, former governors and ministers under the PDP.
