Anambra state, with over 4 million population, 21 local government areas (LGAs) and 5,720 Polling Units (PUs) has recorded an impressive turnout of voters with some arriving at the PUs as early as 7.30 am even before the arrival of electoral officers by 8.35 a.m. Although the security situation in the state has forced the closing down of 86 PUs.

The indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB) earlier enforced sit-at-home order and the activity of unknown gunmen within the state had threatened the conduct of the electoral process; however, since the cancellation of the order, the populace is still apprehensive and many observers believe voters may stay away from the poll but this was not the case as the presence of security personnel has ensured an impressive turnout of voters.

Voting was reported to have commenced at about 9:40 a.m at Polling Units 5, 11, 12, 13, 15 located at the Social Centre in Amaesi ward, Aguata LGA, although there have been hiccups with accreditation equipment in some polling units, the exercise is well underway in others.
