Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi has selected a former aide of ex-president Goodluck Johnathan, Doyin Okupe as his running mate for the upcoming 2023 general elections. This was disclosed on Friday by Okupe during an interview on the Channels Television’s programme “Politics Today”.

Okupe who is Obi’s campaign manager said he was selected to meet up with the June 17 deadline set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the submission of the candidates' list for the 2023 general elections.

According to him, “Choosing the vice-presidential candidate is an electoral process and it does not stop until the process and schedule ends. INEC allows you to present a candidate and later on, if you want to substitute, you may do so, if necessary. But if it’s not necessary, you may as well continue”.

Reports suggest that the Labour Party is in talks with other political parties to form a major alliance capable of facing the two most popular political parties; the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the upcoming 2023 general elections.

Okupe is a medical doctor from Ogun State and also served as spokesperson for former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
