The Oyo State House of Assembly has today impeached the state Deputy Governor, Rauf Aderemi Olaniyi. The impeachment was concluded this morning during the plenary session after the lawmakers adopted the report of a seven-man panel that was constituted by the chief judge of the state, Munta Abimbola, to investigate allegations of misconduct accredited to the said Deputy Governor. The Deputy Governor has been in political turbulence for some time now after losing the battle at the High Court from Justice Ladiran Akintola who dismissed a suit he filed to restrain the lawmakers from impeaching him from office.
In his ruling, justice Akintola posited that the impeachment process initiated by the lawmakers has not violated any constitution.
Subsequently, the state Chief Judge constituted the seven-man committee that was charged with the responsibility of investigating the Deputy Governor.
Prior to that, the Deputy Governor announced his intention of exiting the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the All Progressive Congress, APC.
In a twist, Governor Seyi Makinde announced that he was picking, Bayo Lawal, his former Attorney General as his running mate ahead of the 2023 General election.
Meanwhile, all eyes are on the Governor to announce the replacement of Olaniyi.
