The Senate has confirmed the appointment of Justice Olukayode Ariwoola as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN). The CJN’s confirmation was preceded by questions asked by the Committee of the Whole inside the Senate chambers. Justice Ariwoola responded to questions asked by Senators, he was subsequently asked to take a bow and was confirmed via voice vote.
Senate Leader, Senator Ibrahim Gobir moved for the motion that the acting CJN and his entourage be admitted into the chambers and the motion was approved by the Senate.
Thereafter, Ariwoola and all Justices of the Supreme Court, Presidents of the Federal High Court, Court of Appeal, National Industrial Court, and Secretary of the National Judicial Council walked into the Senate chambers and took their seats.
In July, President Muhammadu Buhari asked the senate to confirm Ariwoola’s appointment as CJN, following the resignation of his predecessor, Ibrahim Muhammad Tanko.
President Buhari had said that Ariwoola’s nomination as CJN was in accordance with Section 231 (1) of Nigeria’s constitution.
